OllantayTambo Ruins

Ollantaytambo is a compound Quechua word that is derived from "Ollanta" and "Tambo" that refers to a city that offered food and comfort for travelers. "Ollanta" was the name of a Captain and part of a drama which was the reason for the name of this place.

The Ollantay Drama tells the story of a captain named Ollanta (today, in 2,006 a man named Ollanta Humala is running for president) that had a secret affair with Kusi Qoyllur. His request for marry was considered illegal because of their different social status. The Captain incited a rebellion that was a cause for a war that lasted a decade. Finally he was captured, but fortunately for him, Inka Pachacutec was dead and his son had clemency and allowed the marriage. This story is very popular in Peruvian Schools.

Ollantaytambo is made of enormous, stepped terraces constructed of unbelievably huge stones and is the last stop along the Sacred Valley. It was a strategic outpost for defense, as well as a religious center.

During his rebelion, Manco Inca retreated here after his defeat at Saqsayhuaman. Pizarro could end the native rebellion after bringing more troops and forcing him to retreat.
