Located at a foothill near the main road to the Antisuyo, Tambomachay is 4 Miles away from to the northeast of Cusco, and at 1 km of Puca-Pucara. Probably, it was one of the favorite resting places of the Incas, but also was one of the main defense systems of the Valley of Cusco. It is also known as Tambo de la Caverna (Cave Roadside Hostelry). Its name comes from two Quechua words: Tampu, which means collective lodging; and Machay, which means resting-place. According to the indigenous tradition, the natural rocky formations were object of worship or magical customs, thatīs why in other references, the word "machay" means "caves", which would describe the particular environment of this place. Other details -------------- It also known as "Baņo de la Ņusta" (Bath of the Ņusta) or "Balneario Inca" (Incan Watering Place). Tambomachay has an extraordinary hydraulic system. Two aqueducts, which kept a constant flow of clean water during the whole year. Water itself was worshiped as the source of life and according to the chronicles, it was the game preserve of Inca Yupanqui.
